Description
COASTAL COMMUTER 55
L.O.A. 55’
L.W.L. 53’ 6”
BEAM 14’ (over rails)
DRAFT 2’ 4 ½” (with keel)
DISPLACEMENT 26,000 lbs (approx)
TYPE Single-chine cold-molded plywood-composite powerboat; twin-screw diesel inboard cruising yacht. This vessel is moderately offshore capable, with trips to Cuba, the Bahamas and beyond practical during settled weather.
CONSTRUCTION Cold-molded marine plywood/epoxy, covered with epoxy-impregnated Xynole-polyester cloth. The hull is built around longitudinals spanning plywood bulkheads, greatly simplifying lofting and construction. Bottom: double-diagonal layers of 7/8”plywood; sides: single layer of 1” plywood; decks: ½” plywood over foam-core/ply sandwich; coachroof & hardtop: foam-core/ply sandwich; web frames: twin 5/8” plywood fore & aft. Cockpit and lockers are self-draining.
PLANS Full construction plans include The Sharpie Book, construction notes and construction details and an illustrated construction manual.
CAPACITIES Fuel: 317 gal (aluminum or SS tank centered). Water: 322 gal. Cruising speed is 10 to 24 knots. Top speed unknown.
POWER Twin Yanmar 4LHA-4HTP (160 peak hp) with ZF44A 7-degree down-angle transmissions. Alternative engines include Yanmar 4BY150/180 diesels.
OPTIONS This vessel may also be powered with naturally-aspirated or stage-one turbo diesels. Fuel economy will be increased at the expense of power and top speed. Different interiors can be designed on a custom basis. Bear in mind that standing headroom is limited to 6’ 6” in the cabin (at centerline) and pilothouse (as originally designed), and should not be increased.
DESIGNER Reuel B. Parker
NOTE This boat is intended to be fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly as well as powerful and fast. The hull displacement distribution is based on engine weight and power limited to the specs shown above. These factors, along with the power described, should not be exceeded for this hull form. Slow down running into large chop, and avoid large beam seas.
