TYPE Shoal-bodied centerboard Chesapeake Bay Brogan—transitional type between sailing Log Canoes and Bugeyes, used in the oyster fisheries during the mid-to-late 19th century. This is a cruising boat capable of coastal and inter-island passages in all but heavy weather. A small Brogan crossed the Atlantic in the 19th century.
ACCOMMODATIONS The layout shown sleeps two to four in the large foc’s’le berth, plus two small children on the settees. Headroom is 4’ 6” @ center. Standing headroom can be implemented at the companionway hatch by erecting a dodger to facilitate cooking.
CONSTRUCTION Cold molded wood/epoxy/fabric: Hull—double diagonal marine ply planks (¼” x 12”) over ¾” x 2” tongue and groove planking laid fore and aft. Decks—½” marine ply over sawn beams. Coachroof—foam-core lamination using 4mm plywood skins sandwiching 1 ½” square sawn spruce beams. Covering system—epoxy impregnated Xynole-polyester cloth finished with linear polyurethane paint systems. Spars—masts hollow octagonal (Bird’s Mouth) laminated Douglas fir/epoxy; booms solid Douglas fir. Interior—painted ply trimmed with varnished hardwoods.
